I'm curious. Why would you want that?

because it then doesn't turn off and drains the battery?

Huh? I dock mine when it's switched off. It stays switched off while it charges.

Oh. I thought he didn't want it to charge up when he connected it.

But even now that I understand, it's still odd. Surely if the power is on, and it's hooked up via USB, then it's just like running off the mains?

Has he tried switching it off in the cradle? Where is he anyway? It is a French national holiday today, perhaps he's off in sympathy. Victory in 1945 day, apparently.

Shouldn't *we* get the holiday for that, not the French? ;-)

I'm guessing the problem is not when the PC is powered on, but when he turns the PC off and the garmin stays on and then runs down the batteries. Switching it off in the cradle does seem like the obvious low-tech solution :)

Well, if he's riding his bicycle around, switching off his PC in his beret, I think he could just switch off the Garmin at the same time. With his garlicky fingers.

I hope he's grateful for all the help we've provided (today, and 1945).

ah, you're playing with you monkey ;)

the only time mine switches on if it makes a bad contact with the dock, i.e. if I don't seat it properly. Maybe check that the contacts are clean.

I'd be really interested to hear how it goes with the charger testing in this country. I'm wondering about one for multi-dayers and I won't have the benefit of the sun like where you are going!

i'll keep you informed, for the moment testing on direct light from a lamp doesn't seem to be very good!
