First experience with the track mode last night. Wasn't prompted to calibrate *but* before the session I did a 3 lap easy warmup jog, starting at the start / finish line, and the measurement was pretty far out compared to what I expected.

So it felt like it's first 3 laps were some form of calibration, even if nothing was obvious at the start. By the 3rd lap an automatic 400m lap interval was being triggered half way down the finish straight.

However, once I was into the intervals proper, the 400m lap "lap" was triggering right at the spot I'd expect it to.

Just an observation. The intervals gave me a lot of confidence to use it properly.

One oddity I'd like to recreate, though it may not be possible, was the 9th "lap" shown below.

I was letting the watch do the autolap at 400m and then stopping the watch just as I stepped off the track at the end of each rep. Then hitting "lap" to reset the distance and potentially account for any additional distance needed (mostly not needed).

But on here lap 9 reports "rest 1s". One of my grumbles with Garmin is that it doesn't allow for a "GPS off" recording of standing recoveries, and I don't like the messy, wandering distance that you get if you keep your watch running through an intervals session. A lap like lap 9 below would be perfect if I could make it happen for a proper rest interval (say 60s, 90s etc) without any distance at all being recorded.

I've had a look at your warm up and it doesn't show any indication of calibration. You have a nice smooth map with start and finish point in the right place.

This is the type of map you would get in the past as you calibrated

Followed by the smooth map in the race.

Sorry, can't see the maps! I did think that too, but it was very noticeable that on lap 1 the "lap" for 400m was triggered way earlier than I'd expected and it shortened every lap.

As I've got multi band GPS turned on I'd expect the laps to be neatly recorded by the GPS anyway though, so not hugely surprising that the map trace is pretty decent.

Just an odd coincidence that the first three laps didn't "ping" after 400m in the way I'd expected, but the subsequent ones did. I could have understood perhaps lap 1 pinging at perhaps just before the mile start line, and then laps 2 and 3 pinging at the same point, but on each lap the ping came earlier and earlier along the final straight. Whereas on subsequent ones, they were consistent every time, plus or minus about 3m.

Anyway, nice to get to try it out. Definitely something I like!

Don't know what was going on with your laps (presumably this is shown on the map somehow) and there may be some individual things it still has to work out but...

Your map trace isn't decent, it's exactly the same for the three laps, if your GPS could do that, there would be no need for track mode and you can test that out by doing a non-track mode session. If your map looks like that on non-track mode, I'd be pretty impressed!

Screen shot of the maps. I can imagine the GPS might be better off with this stuff now but you aren't going to get it seeing each location as exactly the same point lap after lap without track mode.

Just to correct myself, Fetch does allow you to zoom in to a level where you can see separate tracks on track mode even when calibrated but it's a massive difference from what you see from normal GPS.

The old track mode required calibrating the current track if it was new to your watch, the limitation for this system was that the watches could only store 10 entries, the 11th entry would wipe out one of the others.
One of the big Garmin updates in early 2024 was the implementation of a database of track shapes built from our data, as long as someone's run on a track in track mode then it should be stored in the database.

There's a write up about it courtesy of DC Rainmaker, it's the second topic:

I know we’re not really supposed to mention the orange site, but have people seen strava’s new workout suggestions? Total rubbish and DC Rainmaker not impressed. “AI Slop” I think it’s called. I use AI a fair bit, but this is bad. I can’t understand how it can get through like this - what it was suggesting for his cycling just makes no sense at all, and it looks look it we basing his 5K time (which he cannot do any time soon) off of a piece of rogue data. He’s also suggesting their recent run in with Garmin isn’t helping them with features like this, hence posting this here.

Saw also strava are potentially going for an IPO.
