I think you need a chest strap for it. I checked my recent runs and only those with a chest strap had it. It didn't matter if it was the fancier Garmin run HRM or a cheaper brand (Geonaute). This is what it looks like:

Will have to dig out my chest strap and see if it does record that stuff. Not that the chest strap has been particularly reliable for me anyway...

I think you also have to activate HRV recording in the watch (on mine it is Log HRV in System>Data Recording, same place you set smart vs every second data logging).

I've got Log HRV turned on on my watch - which did perplex me when I got the watch because I thought HRV was only available via chest straps! And when I try to do a lactate threshold test it won't let me because it can't measure HRV without it.
(I think it is just non-intuitive design of the menu system; it should be "Log HRV (if available from a chest strap)" but there isn't the space for that!)

Hi all garmin fans.
Is it reasonable to expect your garmin distance to be out? Reason for asking is when I run with my friend she always gets more distance than me. Last week in 10m she had 0.35m more (I had to do another loop to get my distance to 10)
Today lap 1 of our run I had 4.30 she had 4.47 and she ended off 0.20m more me 13.20 her 13.4 and we made sure we started and stopped exactly.
I could think hers is over counting but another friend did 3 laps and also recorded 13.4 and I asked someone else who’d done the half and they said the same. So seems my watch is the anomaly. Yet I have the Fenix 7s solar.
I know it’s not much and it’s not that important really but it would be good to understand why.

What I would do is find a measured mile somewhere, and run that. Or 4 laps of a track. Then you would know exactly what your Garmin is measuring. Doesn't matter what theirs are saying then, if you know that yours is right.

Hard reset the watch. That can help if the distance is out. To do this Press and hold the light button until the screen fades and then power on again. You won’t lose any data from the watch.

Well track isn't the way to 'calibrate' a Garmin which is why track mode exists. Measured road race would work.
A HM is 13.1 so surely that suggests yours is more accurate. I doubt people are really running 13.4 in an accurately measured HM.

By any chance was it a hilly route and does one of you have 3D distance enabled? I don't have 3D distance enabled and whenever I run with a friend he has a further distance logged due to the elevation changes.
