Yes, I get that sometimes if I forget my HRM chest strap. It's worse when I have cold hands which happens frequently in winter. I think it's the reduced circulation when I'm cold. Then it takes the bounce as my HR.

Looking back, I've realised that trace was from a 935 ( but the conclusions are the same)

It was one of the ways that my Fenix 5 would get HR wrong. I usually use a chest strap or a Tickr Fit optical armband as much more reliable (the Tickr goes further up where there's more blood flow and the stretchy strap stops it bouncing around).

My 245 optical HR was hopeless (high), I assumed it was cadence lock - using a Polar OH fixed it

It's really interesting how variable this is. I've posted before that I've been super-impressed with my 645 and how consistent it's HR readings are compared to other devices that I trust. I guess I've just got a wrist / watch location and fit that is optimal.

I do occasionally get duff data (on a run a few weeks ago even when I took the watch off it was reading 160bpm even though my cadence was about 180 and my HR about 135 at the time), but having calibrated it against the Polar OH1+ a few times I know I can trust it to be reliable and can see pretty quickly if it is having an off day. If I was going to estimate, I'd say for any given run it is about a 98% match with the polar on average, and I get an issue with it about once a month.

I think my experience is less of the norm though.

My 645 optical HR was good - then the strap binding post fell apart out of guarantee and I bought a 245

Performance condition - I get the basic concept and I actually don't think I've ever really "disagreed" with its assessment when it first pops up about 6 minutes into an activity.

In fact, it often seems scarily accurate. Running from home I've broadly got two options - uphill or downhill for about a mile in each case. Obviously if I run downhill I tend to achieve a higher pace / lower HR, and uphill a higher HR / lower pace. So I would have expected a downhill start to have given me a massively fantastic 6 minute performance condition report, and vice versa for the uphill options. But most of the time it seems to come out with a pretty reasonably number, and definitely doesn't appear to trend in line with the downhill or uphill route.

I know it factors in pace and HR. I'm on a optical device with the 645, so I don't think it does HRV (though it may). Does it also factor in elevation change? I suppose it's unlikely that we know!

larkim, if you use runalyze, you may see the HRV graph of your runs on that platform. I'm running with a 745 and a strap and I get HRV there whereas Garmin doesn't include that in its stats.

Caution, runalyze is a deep rabbit hole if you haven't come across that yet. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Yep, I'm a runalyze disciple. Not spotted that yet though; will dig...
