My Garmin sometimes offers me a new LT after a hard workout, regardless of what the aim of the session was. I don't know what the criteria are for that, it may happen after a VO2 max interval session or after tempo runs when I have aimed at staying below my known LT. Then it may go lower than it was and I just discard it. I only take it when I'm doing a field test as described on the 80/20 website.

So far, I haven't managed to get a LT when I did the Garmin test. I usually fail the last segment of the test when it wants me to run close to my max HR and my HR just won't budge further up. Instead of giving me a lower value, it just says 'unable to detect threshold'. Another problem is when I have to stop at traffic lights during the fast segments, it makes the test invalid.

55s is 42mm diameter, 255s is 41mm diameter

There's a 55s? Or is that a typo? Couldn't find one!

255s is out of acceptable price range for the user in question (my better half!); and it doesn't come in purple!

Surprised to see that the screen on the 45s is the same size as the screen on the 55 or the full sized 45. So just a small case.

45s is smaller then, only 39.5mm vs the full size 45 which is 42. Not a huge difference but about 11% smaller in terms of overall area on the wrist.

The 255s is 41 so not much smaller than the standard 45 or 55.

255 is 46

My watch actually detected a LT yesterday. It's wrong given it matches the average pace I ran for 52 mins yesterday at avg 10 bpm lower than it detected but it detected one all the same.

New one from Garmin the day after XC, strained. Basically down to my VO2 Max as per the watch dropping after a heavy cold/ flu a few weeks back.

I've had Strained just once. I recommend rigging a gig, taking everything back down again then walking home because you've had about three beers and a shot more than your average Friday night.
