Think I already know the answer to this - but is it possible to have a route with 2 options? I.e. a main route and then a diversion? Basically I have a route which officially has 2 diversions, one where sometimes the crops in the field are too high so you have to go around on the roads, the other where if the water in the river is too low the ferry might not be running so you have to do a loop to get to the nearest bridge. I would like to have these shown on the watch as alternatives as I won't know until I get there whether I need to take them or not. Does that make sense?

An NL question, clearly I'm pretty sure not. On the odd occasion like this I have made two routes in advance - either two complete ones, or the extension part as a short route to switch to if the need arises. Either way you can switch routes while the same activity is still running.

Steve's right - no way to do it at the moment on a Garmin. I'm reasonably sure (it's a while since I went through it!) that the route file format can't support it - it's point-to-point only.
I do the same as Steve and have an alternative route I can load up if I need it. I use it if I need escape routes on mountain routes. You can swap between routes during the same activity.

During the activity, go into the settings menu and choose Stop Course to cancel the running course, and then back into the menu -> Navigation -> Courses -> <select course> -> Do course.
It might vary slightly with model, but that should give you an idea.

Or you could plot both routes, after you get to where they rejoin, track back and plot the diversion. That way you see both on the map together. i.e. if your route is ABCE or ABDE, plot ABCBDE Obvs distance remaining will be wrong

If you just want one route....... If you've been able to check out the diversions and the normal routes in advance ( via Streetview, or satelite imagery, etc ) and if one of the options is straightforward then for each of the possible 2 diversions I'd plot the more complicated option.
eg the ferry that you mention or the detour - assuming the detour meets up at the opposite side of the river near where the ferry disembarks, then I'd plot the detour, and if the ferry runs then you'll be "off route" for the crossing but you know that, and can just ignore, but that's better than plotting the ferry and having to do the complicated detour without any guidance. Hope that makes sense ! It does mean that your distance remaining may be wrong until you're past the two possible diversions.

Thanks for the suggestions all. I think I will stick to having the "proper" route on the watch and if I need the detour then I will have the guidebook in my backpack, plus the route with diversions shown on my phone using plotaroute. The more complicated diversion is still just "follow the river to next bridge, cross river, follow river back again. Try to keep feet dry" Or I guess I could do what one person I know did, and have a crew meet me with a canoe...
