You must have missed something because HRV is calculated from data obtained from the sensor on the back of the watch. That's the first sentence at the beginning of one of the sections here garmin.com

Garmin's overnight stats do use optical and use some fairly aggressive averaging and removal of questionable data to produce the HRV values. It's a lot more practical with a full night of data where you are keeping pretty still and the heart rate is low than it is to extract HRV during a run when the HR is higher and there's a lot of arm swing affecting the HR data.

It will probably start using optic hr for that for sure?

My question was motivated by trying it (HRV) with the alpha software, which may now be the beta software with the watch alone and not getting anything happening over several nights whereas DC Rainmaker implies that you simply update the software and there is is.

Ah, ok, that was not clear from your original post.

I have a fenix 6x which has collected the data correctly with 22.76 and 22.80. It is in battery saver overnight with OHR and activity detection still on to collect sleep and HRV. The data show in watch widgets but there is a bug where HRV does not sync via Bluetooth or WiFi, only by wired connection to Express on a computer - maybe that last is the issue?

I have been syncing my Fenix 6 Pro with the laptop and Express just to see if that fixes anything

What do you see in the Training Status widget? It should have updated to show one-word summaries of VO2max, HRV and Acute Load. What firmware version are you running?

It doesn't show that. The firmware reports 22.80 but I installed the alpha version containing the HRV stuff

Odd. I have 22.80 and it has the HRV. I wonder if it's a missing piece of sensor software? I have BMX 5.0.5 (don't know what that is), WHR 5.00.05, ANT/BLE/BT 6.15, Sensor Hub 20.04
