i've just had a "dummy" run thru the buttons to press so i'm assuming that having selected trail run , navigate , selected the course to follow and then selected pace pro it will still show the map on the screen but then alert me if ahead / behind ......... ? hmmmm i'm wondering if i might get annoyed with it bleeping at me lots ;-)

Oh yeah. I wasn't navigating. I just had pace guidance I think on the watch screen on what is typically a very well sign posted race.

A lesson learnt for me not to rely on signs at the least, know where the different distances fork :-)

I was coming back from injury, so half-distance was probably a good thing.

Would pace guidance be a good idea for my (flat) track race Sunday! Ideally I want to run 50km in 6 hours!

How do I set that up?

You could try using the old-fashioned Virtual Partner for that, J. https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/fenix66s6xpro/EN-US/GUID-80AA39BE-7DDD-4CEE-B7DA-7F679286EA1A.html.

Old school - just have 2 data fields Average Pace and Last Lap Pace on one of your screens.

As long as you can remember your target (ink it on your hand/arm/etc) then a quick glance at your screen will show how your current and overall pace is doing against target

Jelly - don't aim for 7:14/km, or you'll miss your target, it's 7:12/km you need ;-)

For a flat track race you don't need any fancy pace guidance unless you want to build in some degree of +ve/-ve split. If you just want a steady pace you could use the virtual partner, set up alerts for a pace range, or create a custom session where the effort is to run 7:12 pace for 6 hrs. If you want some degree of split to allow for fade you could build this into the custom workout.

Given Pace Pro is based on a GPX track it's unlikely to work well for a track race unless you're prepared to generate a route that accurately goes around the track 125 times! (assuming its a 400 track :-) )

I'm not sure I'd want to count on it keeping track of the number of loops properly, either. Usually it's fine for courses which loop back on themselves, but very occasionally I've had a Garmin decide I had a lot further to go than was actually the case, then take a while to concede that I was on the correct route later on.
