Just a random thing because I don’t really understand the altimeter!

But surely it should read the same whenever I’m ‘at home’ ?

Yes, but the calibration is weather-dependent and can drift as a result. It'll try to calibrate automatically off GPS when you're running so should be reasonably consistent when you arrive back from a run. When you're not moving, it should assume any changes in pressure are weather, depending on your settings. It can get a bit fuzzy if you're, say, indoors at work and moving around a lot while the weather is changing.
What watch do you have?

The thing with water resistance is yes if every possible point for water ingress is as factory then you should be fine (within the ratings - which don't mean what they suggest to the layperson). The difficulty is knowing when any link in the chain has failed.

Ok, so that has digital elevation mapping and can calibrate from that when you get a GPS fix, so should be accurate at the start of every run, but may drift a bit if you go through weather changes.
If you don't put it in low power mode overnight, it should try to set the elevation automatically in the middle of the night, too.
Right now my 6x says 7m instead of 24m, but I haven't been out since Saturday (unwell rather than lazy) and I do use low power mode overnight so it hasn't calibrated since then, and the weather's been very changeable, so I'm not too concerned by that.

No disagreement there, and to be fair Garmin are open about it

Yes, not something you want to learn the hard way. I wouldn't want to discourage people from using Garmin and Suunto watches that are intended for swimming from using them that way, though.
It does seem a shame that these devices are not really designed for long-term use - they don't need to be in the Rolex or Patek Philippe realm, but being able to get a service with a fresh battery, glass if needed and seals renewed after a couple of years would be a bit more environmentally sound if you're happy with the features you have.

Today it’s at 3, yesterday it was 65, I don’t really pay much attention to it as a rule it’s only I saw people chatting about it on here! I will keep an eye on it!
