On the contrary - I'm happy to trust any coach for as long as they're telling me to take a rest day...

@SPR neither would I!

I did watch an interesting (sponsored) YouTube vid from The Running Channel where they followed the coach on a new Fr55 for a month. For that runner they did get a varied bunch of training and appeared to improve but it doesn't take any external factors into account eg races.

Nice add in but not something I can see many runners making regular use of.

I reckon it will be used a lot but by people less experienced. If it gives some structure to overwise unstructured training then it's got to be a positive.

I think I’ve turned the training advice off my fenix!

Ok so I’ve not used the maps function properly as yet but I have downloaded the gpx for my 100km in August!

So if I’m going to use that route what do I need to do in simple terms, do I just click on it instead of starting my watch to ‘run’ as normal?

As to why I bought a fenix (6s pro)

It was mainly to get better battery life! My old Garmin 235 was 2 years old, it had stopped vibrating and Garmin did replace it with a reconditioned 235 that mr jelly is using!

jelly, you load the gpx onto the watch by importing it in via Garmin Connect. You then need to sync it to the watch (via GC or GC Mobile). When it's on the watch you start a running activity, press Up to get to the menu, scroll to navigation: courses find the course and select it and 'Do Course'.

Depends on the structure TBH.

Training status is off for me so no training advice given.

I don't thing the running channel had enough volume to make much difference to the stress / HRV the Garmin watch measures.

I follow Dan Nash of twitter - he seems to put stock in the measure although he uses HRC4Training a phone app that takes a daily reading. The Garmin in theory can record more data at rest and in the day and has some data for course elevation, weather and subjects rating of intensity / feel.

Of course, Dan has both the knowledge and experience to string lots of data together to get the best out of training but I think the Garmin has potential - they are sitting on a tonne of data after all. At the very least it's a another tool in the box to assist coaches beyond athletes reporting.

( Dan'sTwitter bio: Exercise physiology PhD student with WelshAthletics & WelshTriathlon Also 2:18 marathoner, GB 50k record holder & founder of The Endurance Physiology Clinic).

All that said, I can't see how Garmin can advise me at the moment - it has no idea what I am even training for. For all it knows, it could be 800m or the marathon.

Thanks for the Dan Nash share. I'll take a look at that.

I think the key thing with the Running Channel is the video was sponsored, presumably by Garmin.

As CW said it'll probably be of most use for newer runners or maybe those who don't have anything they are training for and need a prompt for a session...
