I loosened the optical strap a little today and it seems to still work fine although the trace isn't as locked on (entirely possible that is down to the chest strap) avg 1 beat different whereas it was exactly the same on Saturday.

Still looks pretty good! I found an average 1bpm difference - I needed to shift one a few seconds to get the best registration, and then the differences were just noise, but an average shift of 1 bpm.

Yeah agreed. I guess the question is whether the slight difference is down to being that bit tighter on Saturday or just coincidence. Either way the data is good enough.

Coincidence. Being tighter might give a better signal quality, so be more reliable, but too tight and it's counterproductive.

If I can be bothered / find the time I shall go and grab some equipment from the lab and do some recordings over christmas. We have a system that can log multiple PPG sensors + ECG in parallel... Just a shame getting into the lab is a PITA at the moment

I've got a couple of things
First I have a Fenix 5 and use the optical HR throughout the day but have taken to using a HRM during training. I don't have to turn the wrist HR off do I?

Second Garmin uses a different time to us!
So I set a workout up on my Fenix and off I go into the world of Zwift. Saturday my 75mins by Garmin was >73 on Zwift! and yesterday's short session wasn't the same either. It's like a Garmin minute is fractionally quicker than time itself which isn't much on short sessions but over a longer session could be /is minutes. Anyone else noticed this?

EP - no it will default to the strap when it is attached

EP - I dont wear my garmin and record it twice but expect that zwift runs slow , I have got out of sync on the treadmill :¬)

But if it isn't on Garmin does it count?!
How can you get strava files to fetch? That's why I use Garmin too

Is Zwift doing a strava and doing moving time? 2 mins out is a lot and pretty sure Garmin will be right.
