I think the optical HRV on the watches works when not exercising. That fits with what DVR says about the Scosche Rhythm 24 only doing HRV at rest.

Hrv, at least as a stress metric, only makes sense when at rest.

The PhD student I mentioned was doing his PhD specifically on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system which is why I asked him if he had considered using HRV among the battery of tests he was using on volunteers such as myself to discover whether serious runners in their 50s and 60s keep their nervous systems "young" (simplistically) compared to sedentary people of the same age. I think you can guess the answer. Anyway his response to my question was pretty much that the results would be exceedingly hard to do anything with as pretty much all that is known is more variation = more betterer. So in summary it is all very interesting, but what does it tell you about your running? If the reply is to use the bogus stress thing to indicate when you should run, I would be running twice a week max, which is silly. I would honestly put as much faith in a horoscope. |

I think it's value is in relative values rather than absolute, and per person, not inter-person. It provides a trend that should allow you to monitor your own condition and so gauge training intensity.

How does Garmin define the parameters for an RHR estimate? Presumably it's not just a single data point.

I believe it constantly monitors HR throughout the day and averages the low points.

Not sure on Garmin, but there is some information on how fitbit does it in this paper, and I would guess Garmin are broadly the same. medrxiv.org In previous ECG-based studies, I have just taken the lowest 5% mark of the HR as a rough indicator. |

If you wear it overnight, it's based on an average of sleep time, leaving out obvious waking period. If not it is something like the lowest 10 minute running average in the day, so it won't say 25 if the ohr glitches and misses a few beats. I could probably source that with s bit more time to spare than I have right now.
