That's the first place I've not seen DC's caveat about optical HR. I'm sure the caveat was there on the individual review.

I get the theory which is why I'm tempted but DC generally has a good time with optical HR (and he's still just one person) so I'd really want to see those that don't get on with wrist HR using armbands in high intensity situations.

CW - fine to throw in the washing machine? If not, then it's not the same as previously when you could detach.

My comments about my first optical armband. I have a Tickr Fit now. Actually two as I lost one then found it after ordering a replacement, so you’d be welcome to borrow it to test it out.
I haven’t done this level of testing on the Tickr as yet, but HR looked very close, HRV-derived parameters maybe not so close, so training effect looked lower than I’d expect in hard runs. Wrist isn’t as good for me, Zone 3 while charging up a hill in a 5k course best really wasn’t right.

I thought so CW. I'm still using a removable and have one or two spare new straps. Does anyone know why they went away from removable module?

Apparently its more reliable (but then again there might be a marketing reason to sell more high cost straps)

Bit off topic but I have a fenix 6s in white and rise gold. They’ve now gone and brought out a black and rose gold that is beautiful and I’m so tempted to sell mine and buy that - I know it’s bonkers but hey who isn’t bonkers now and again.

Of course the sensible thing would be to wait and see what other colours they bring out in the solar 6s or even wait for the 7.... maybe I have local lockdown fever.

OK, done a bit of geekery to try to find where VO2Max is stored in the .fit file generated by a Garmin watch post-activity.

By using fitfileviewer.com and viewing a handful of my files which had been reported on Runalyze I found that the un-decoded mesg_num 79 contains field 0 which has a 100% correlation with the VO2Max figures that I see reported on the RA website.

I get figures in the 16000/17000 range and dividing these numbers by 292.5 or .6 gives me a match.

I've no idea why 292.5 might be a translation (anyone with some insight here?) but if that is the right field and value then that would assist Lord Fetch in potentially being able to extract it.

Would be useful if someone else could see if the same value / field from one of their .fit files matches the same experience I've recorded above.

On the fitfileviewer page you need to uncheck the "Hide messages without name ('mesg_num #')" filter otherwise mesg_num 79 is not displayed as the author hadn't decoded the values.

CW, does that mean you have a bath wearing your Garmin chest strap ;-) ? If you liked a hot bath, I guess it could return some interesting readings.

My Forerunner 35 arrived on Friday afternoon. Used so far for a walk-jog, two bike rides, a fake parkrun and some intervals with warm-up and cooldown. Very pleased with it so far, including the wrist hr. (Mr wrists do have a bit of "chunk" about them, so no issue there.). Much more compact form than my old GPS, very clear display, and much quicker to update bike speed - my old watch would display what I did about 10-15s before.

The only glitch is that I can't use Garmin Connect! My phone (not that old) is Android 5; Connect needs 6 upwards. I liked being able to Bluetooth to my phone when out and about, and update Fetch ota if I wanted. Also missing out on the other features. On the other hand, once I'm connected to the PC, the auto-upload to Fetch is sooo much more convenient, it could have been worth the price of admission by itself.
