It came over in the end, not once, not twice, not even thrice. Four copies!

Nothing beat the chest strap for HRM.After week of deliberating even daring to think was there something better out there I am ordering a Fenix 5S it was a toss up between that and 935xt and as both same price opted with Fenix.

I beg to differ welshpoppy! I had the garmin red cheststrap and it worked well for about 6-8 months but then started glitching against static t-shirts. Whereas the armband Polar OH1+ hasn't missed a beat.

My t-shirts seem to cause me more trouble than most, so this might be quite specific to me of course!

Assuming you used those shirts in the first 6-8 months? The new straps are one piece right so can't be washed?

Optical seems to be so individual specific Vs strap.

Yes, though I have a pet theory that t-shirts washed and dried outside create fewer problems than those air dried inside in the winter (we don't use a tumble drier, we use a dehumidifier in a small room instead). I tend to wear a loose "technical" top all year round and no specific one was worse than the rest.

Optical on the wrist does seem sketchy / pot luck as to whether you can get it in the sweet spot, but on my fore-arm with the elasticated strap it's flawless (for me!). At least I can rule out static issues though.

I think that's the point though. Flawless for you. It tempts me as I said here or elsewhere, but knowing that optical accuracy is said to be so individual, it needs more adoption first I think.

Not just me. DC Rainmaker's review of 3 of the optical armbands notes:-
"Anyway – the reason I like armband optical HR sensors such as the three compared here – is that they tend to be very accurate. That’s primarily because it’s an incredibly good place to measure your heart rate. Unlike your wrist, there’s usually a bit more ‘flab’ and ‘chunk’ for really good quality readings. Additionally, your upper arm tends to absorb the vibrations that your wrists don’t in certain applications, like riding. Further, for indoor hand-driven workouts (like weights), again, your wrist being strained also can produce issues with optical HR sensors like those in a watch. But upper arm? Very rarely an issue here, even when under strain in the gym.

Finally – not only that, but optical HR straps in this position aren’t susceptible to dryness issues that conventional chest straps are (such as in cooler/dryer fall or early spring weather). "

It's that final para which chimes with me, matched with the first comment about accuracy.

SPR, the one piece Garmin straps are fine for washing, in fact there are washing instructions on the end tab of the strap. You re meant to wash them one a week. I usually just wash it in the bath.
