EP, either! :-) You can set it to auto-lap on stop/start or not.

now serious question
I'm racing Sunday and I think I have set the virtual partner to give me a PB!
so on Sunday how do I actually use the VP?

from memory...

go into the VP page, set it up with the time/dist/pace combo you want and then press done. This puts you onto it's 'ready' page with the pace you are aiming for and distance left to run. Then press start when you are cross the line as per usual.

The initial page will update the pace and distance to go, and you can then use the arrow key to change to the usual 'data' screens and the graphical one showing you ahead/chasing your virtual partner.

I may just test it this week but that sounds nice and easy!

it is.

one thing to note though which can be a bit tricky for races is that it seems now when it hits the target distance it stops the clock. This has caught me out twice recently (luckily on training runs).

This never used to happen, so either it is a feature of the latest firmware release or mine's gone doolally, or it was user error and I hit stop by accident. I'd recommend using it on a short training run to get used to it and then you can also see if yours does the same (and let us know?)

Anybody else suffered with this problem?

hmmmm
luckly the race I am doing is the same one I have run the last 3 months and it seems to be only just over 5m by under 0.1m so the difference won't be great and I have set the VP to give me a PB of 54 seconds!!
But yes good idea will play with it tonight and try on tomorrow's run!

Yes. I used in in a HM last year, and it stopped the clock about 100m before the finish line. I won't use that feature in races again.

flanker, I think that's a "feature" of the 305. It's the reason I never use the VP for races, you'd almost inevitably be stranded before the end. Actually I always estimate my target pace assuming the Garmin will end up telling me I've run 13.2 miles, say, for a half-marathon, so I'll need to aim for a slightly faster pace on the Garmin to compensate, or risk missing the time by a minute or so.

I leave auto pause off on the Garmin and use the stopped pace and speed function in SportTracks. This can be set up by clicking on the settings tab down the left hand side of the screen, then when the settings box pops up click on the down facing arrow next to where it says athlete and choose analylis from the drop down menu. You can then change your stopped pace in min/mile and mph. So for example if you set it for 15min/mile it will log you as stopped for anything less than this pace.
