Try a hard (master) reset: https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={4315c510-5161-11dc-4ec8-000000000000} That will delete all your settings & your history too, so make sure you've got all that off the 305 first. Has your memory got completely full at some point? It's supposed to handle that gracefully, but maybe something's gone wrong. If you can't see the history, it sounds as though the memory's got corrrupted somehow, but it might be retrievable with the master reset above.
If that link doesn't work, it says:
If for any reason you feel as if your Forerunner 101, 201, 301, 205, 305, or 310XT needs to be reset, use the steps outlined below. Use such a sequence sparingly and only when needed (i.e. lockup, reset to factory default, etc...).
*Master resetting the device will erase all history in the device and reset the device to factory default.
To master reset your device, please use the following button sequence:
Power the device off
Press and hold the mode and power button
Release the buttons once the Do You Really Want To Erase All User Data? message appears
Highlight Yes by pressing the Up Arrow button
Once you press Enter, the fitness device will now reset.
If you are unable to power the device off, please press the lap/reset and mode button at the same time for about 5 seconds. The device will then power off and allow for you to perform the master reset described above.

sounds like the lap memory has become full. When that happens it drops laps off from the start of the current run while still retaining summary detail. deleting history should clear it, otherwise you are into resetting. And possibly shopping

I think its a memory thing too: mine does this if I log more than about 40 miles in one session, because I'm not very disciplined about clearing the data!

Flanker, does it really start cutting the current run instead of culling the oldest data? That's horrible design!

Thanks - got a short run in the morning and will see if it behaves. I had cleared history (aprt from last 3 months) after the run today so fingers crossed that will work. If not master reset!!!!

Badger, yes it does. On several ultras I've had no detailed info for the first part of the run, but just a single 'lap' of multiple miles with no detail or route info, just a summary of distance and time. On the early software releases it just happened, but on the later ones it did prompt that lap memory was nearly full, allowing you to delete older data manually before it became a problem.
To some extent I can see why it does this, as it means you never lose all info on any run, but I would have designed it so that it kept a record of what had been downloaded and then culled those on an oldest first basis. Then though I suppose you hit the problem of what to do if you run out of downloaded runs to cull...
Interestingly I've never had this on the 310.

Not good. I've never had that on a 310 either - I could be cynical and say it's because it needs to be master reset so often, but the truth is worse: it's not capable of automatically deleting any data when the memory gets full, it will just messily stop recording. So your data would be even worse than on a 305.

I think you are all being a bit harsh...Garmins are simply magic. Every time my baby gives me the same fault, I just apologise and do a little clearing out. She understands, and on the next run records data perfectly. Every now and then I need to give her a little reset TLC and she always comes back smiling - well beeping.
I suppose a software improvement might be to display a little message saying something like, "you are not looking after me very well, I need a bit of clearing out otherwsie I won't be able to remember the last few miles you big lummox".

I've only had to reset my 310 once and that was because of the lousy 3.7 s/w release. And never had any issues with it filling up even when doing several 30+ hour events
(now I've gone and cursed it)
