SparkyMark
Just in the hope that someone has solved this problem before ...

My 305 is playing up. If I try to switch it on, it acts like the battery is dead.

However, if I put it in the cradle and connect it to the PC - its recognised, displays charging in progress/charging complete on the Garmin, and I can then switch it on. As soon as I take it out of the cradle, it turns off.

I have tried the soft reset - makes no difference

One thing I have tried is pressing down hard on the top part of the watch (where Forerunner is printed) and the unit switches on - I did check battery and its fully charged. As soon as I let go, it switches off.

One other point - it has got a little damp over the last few days, so will attempt a dry out in the airing cupboard as a last resort.

If someone can share some pearls of wisdom - let me know

Thanks

SparkyMark- That's the battery connection. at the top end. There is a row of spring connectors between the two halves.

You #could# separate the unit, repair the connection and re-seal.

Won't work.

Send it back to Garmin for a refurb / repair. It's the only option really. Sorry

my 305 is also showing signs of this SparkyMark. I was out on Thursday and it got a tad wet thanks to the rain. I left it to dry but it won't power up unless its in the cradle. Tried the soft & hard reset with no joy. All the firmware's up to date but as soon as you remove it out the cradle, it dies.

305 was working OK on Thursday during my last run, this took place is the rain as usual.

Went to use it on Sunday and nothing happened. Stuck the watch into the cradle and like everyone else is reporting the unit started up no problem.

As soon as you remove the unit from the cradle it powers off. I'd tried the hard & soft resets and nothing happened. I then found this thread and here are my findings.

With little or no effort, I used my finger nails, I opened the top casing of the unit. I found that the 2 outer contacts between the circuit board and the battery connections to be heavily corroded, so much so that one of the prongs was rattling about in the casing so it had departed the circuit board hence the lack of battery power.

I'd guess this watch is dead. Surely there is a case here to force Garmin into repairing or replacing these faulty units. A common fault obviously since a lot of 305 users are also experiencing the exact same issue. My garmin will be 3 yrs old in December 2010 so it looks to be failing on others around the same age.

Cheers Matt and flanker, I'll try Garmin 1st as the insurance excess is £50 anyway
