Andy I don't think galileo is operational yet, not before 2013: en.wikipedia.org and as far as compatibility goes, i am sure you will need new devices !

Mine lost contact halfway through a race last week which was incredibly annoying - it stopped recording at 4.48 miles and I had to do the other 5 and a half miles on my own! It was a road race, so there was always a view of the sky - apart from the odd bridge!

It also seems to have slowed down in picking up the signal when I am heading out.

Is there anything I can do about this, or is it gently dying...?

I cleared it down about 3 months ago - when it started playing up - seemed to help for a bit but I am not sure it is that full (had about 18 months worth on there before)

you might want to clear it up a bit again, I have noticed that when it is getting close to be full the GPS becomes more erratic for some unknown reason!

it's the weight of that extra data it's going to have to carry.

My 305 wa reasonably OK on forest tracks, far better than the 301 which lost the signal very easily. If you can afford it, the 310 is better still - I've never lost signal in even heavy woods yet.

Did you mean Galileo or EGNOS? Either way I'm pretty sure the forerunners don't have WAAS, EGNOS or Galileo capabilities, but for running there really is no need for that degree of accuracy - my 305/310 is generally accurate to within a few inches.

in town my 305 seems to be logging more the work of a piss head stumbling through the streets than my athletic efforts :-P

Thought I would share something - apologies if it has been posted before:

Sometimes when running I am not overly confident with where I am going, especially off road routes

If I want to run a route I have run before, I have turned my route I previously uploaded in to a course on the Garmin Training Centre Software, added in the little "turn left" and "turn right" arrows and successfully followed it at a later date.

However recently I've been stuck with a dilema: I want to run a course that I have NOT run before and not get lost. So the other day I:

1. Plotted a route on Gmap-pedometer gmap-pedometer.com (you can get it to follow roads or just map "free style" as you wish and with the satellite view can see fields etc and map across these)

2. Once you have plotted, save it as a book mark just in case and choose to export as a GPX (and follow the instructions on the external link to get it to generate a GPX file from the Gmap-pedometer)

3. Use this site to convert the GPX in to a TCX file gpsies.com

4. I can then load the TCX file in to the Garmin Training Centre, put the arrows left and right turn on this course and upload to my watch to follow the route

Simples. Works really well. There is probably an easier way of doing it with less steps but it worked for me.

I am not responsible if anyone gets lost :-p
