There are timing mats every 5 km, a good way of keeping a steady pace.

Yup My garmin went screwie early on. Not a reason to not to run a decent course.

It is a good course. No notable gradients apart from a couple of dual-carriageway on-ramps. Not unattractive, either. Not Paris run-tourist-magic alluring, but with the notable advantage of being bereft of French people ;-)

The line is very clear so anyone running 26.8 has either had garmin issues (common in big races anyway and because of the buildings) or has taken a pretty circuitous route! Should need a GPS to pace it out really, especially with km markers...pretty regular check on your pace just manually lapping. Does get busy at the start and tend to find people here (more than other races end up running off like fools, which can be busy for the first mile or two. People charged off past me some with 4hour pace bands on (given I was running 2.45 pace this seemed odd), but all settles down after 2-3 km and it's pretty easy for most to run a pretty quick line. Not as open as Berlin but still space enough, and certainly a quick course.

How easy is it to get to the start on race day via public transport? Flights booked but not accommodation so would be handy to know if it matters where we stay in Frankfurt?

Stoosh there are plenty of hotels within half a mile of the start which is at the exhibition centre, most of the hotels offer reasonable marathon rates.

Easy-peasy! I stayed in the Golden Leaf out by the Ostbahnhof and was probably less than 20 minutes from the start by one single tram. The start is one stop from Central Station.
