Make it 30, and include 5-10 minutes of drills. I think you'll see the benefit.

I've a swimmer in the lane I coach at the tri club that either stays still or goes backwards when they kick. Anyone any ideas why it's happening(ankle flexibility??) and how I help them can fix this?

Almost certainly ankle flex (or lack of). Need to work on improving plantar flexion with stretching at home and maybe some fin use in the pool. Also check they are kicking from the hip and not bringing their knee forwards.

Kicking from the hip is 100% impossible!

The knee has got to bend.

I don't know where the propulsion on a crawl kick comes from.

And this is why I gave up commenting about swimming technique: there's always some idiot that "knows better". Thanks for reminding me. I'll be off now, back to my day job. Teaching and coaching swimming (about which I clearly know nothing).

Thank you Angus Clydesdale, think I'll recommend using fins at our sessions for now. Just ignore thems that think they know better!

I would have to disagree Fozzy, I often watch a couple of swimmers at my pool and they have this beautiful, languid kick from the hip that combines with excellent rotation and princess pointy-toes, nary a bent knee in sight.

In any case - and please AC, step in here if you feel this is incorrect - is it not the case that only a small percentage of our forward motion comes from the legs? Unless you're a SwimSmooth "Kicktastic" of course :-) The primary goal of that kick is to keep your legs and hips up in the correct position.

I am a *terrible* kicker and really hated the kick drills. My biggest breakthrough came when I realised I swam much better if I hardy kicked at all.

I realised how unimportant legs are to propulsion when I was doing drills as my local pool and a double leg amputee was swimming wonderful front crawl.
