Hi all,

It's been a bit of a horrific day for server performance :-)

I need to do a reset of the Fetchpoint markers i.e. I need to clear them out, and resprinkle them. I've made a couple of changes, to see if I can make things a bit more workable as the game becomes more popular. It should help make your maps render faster, and should mean that the game doesn't put too much pressure on the server, which should in turn mean fewer failed imports, crashes, etc.

The biggest change is to the coins. I will put less of them on the map, but increase their value.

The new sprinkle looks at the player density in your area (which wasn't quite working right in any case, but now is, fingers crossed).

It uses:

round( 120 / (number of players within a two mile radius of you, including you))

to work out how many coins to sprinkle.

So if you're playing in isolation, you'll get 120 coins within your mile. If there's someone within 2 miles, you'll get 60. And if there are 28 players within two miles of you (that's the highest figure in the database), you'll get just four coins each - but of course you'll have 28x4 = 112 other coins to steal too.

To make up for there being less coins, they will now become more valuable. They will vary from 100 to 500 credits.

I estimate that this will mean approximately 110,000 coins sprinkled on the map each day, rather than the 300,000 current figure (on a day when it works), and 900,000 (when it goes haywire).

Please bear with me as I make the change, and help me to look after subsequent posters on this thread, who may not see this post :-) I will make sure I don't remove any already-collected Garmin markers. However, there are a couple of hundred user-bought markers on the map - they might end up disappearing - sorry :-/

I hope you're still having fun with the game - it got me to my longest run for about 14 months on Friday, just nipping about collecting bugs.

Cheers
Fetch
PS Relays will make a return. Somehow I'd commented them out :-)

Just read the last two posts...the first with almost 7000 points return per mile made me want to give up and go back to conquercise. The second with details of the coin sprinkling gave me hope of a fairer future

few, glad I read that post Fetch - just got back from work and had a bit of a panic when I saw my map with less coins and 3 more people registered locally than before.

Just to say that i too am loving this game (and of course taking it *far* too seriously lol) and it's got me out and about and running round places I'd not been to in my local Pi before :-)

Will these changes have any affect on where the coins are sprinkled ? As less coins will inevitably mean less will land on the places that can actually be got to around here, without risking mad cows, pregnant sheep and even more irate farmers with devil collie dogs to nip my ankles.

Belly - not immediately, although I have tightened the radius up so that the coins all fall within your mile circle. Longer term, the plan is to take the locations of all the reported markers, and to make sure that markers are never dropped within that 80m radius ever again. The checking process involved is quite processor intensive however, so I'm a bit hesitant at the moment, until I've got the server back to a good place.

will there be any coins scattered outside your mile circle or only within it?

Glad to hear it has been an horrific day for the server - means I might not need a new computer after all :)

everything now seems far apart and inaccessible - it's going to be hard to gather much tonight in the dark and the snow :-(

Crikey - I can see roads again! But it does mean back to the planning board for tomorrow's run!

Oldblueyes - great score! Well done!

oh no, I only bought a marker this morning! :(

However, if it runs better then that's fine with me.
