Alternatively you could go straight over the traffic lights and turn into the college car park which is first left after the little roundabout by the barracks museum. first car park is quite small, college car park is bigger. they werent charging to park in it this week so i dont think they are charging for it yet, thought they might as they are suggesting people park there and walk into town.
