i think though that the MD / LD running world already has a sensible way of dealing with the cold - road running / XC. Given the volumes of runners that turn up for those, track won't cut it in terms of providing enough capacity.

For elites (and in that, I'm more or less including anyone who would voluntarily choose to run a 10k on track!) there are enough road races with TT / SD starts around at the moment and they look likely to continue. If they get canned then potentially I could see some limited entrance longer races on the track, but they wouldn't be catering for many runners.

Oh of course you are right, larkim! I was getting carried away with my track-centric thinking! :-)

Sharkie - Generally the guidance regarding XC has meant organisers aren't super keen. The MCAA seems to want to put the Midland champs on in November though. In what form who knows. Did you see my post on the parkrun thread about the BMC guy's TTT idea?

Yes, can't imagine 5000 indoors. 3000 and down to cater for the MD runners that don't want to do XC and road running which as Larkim says is the normal winter solution.

Larkim - Agree track won't cut it with the numbers involved.

In my age group in 2018, only 268 runners recorded a 5000m time (V45) and only about 300 in the V40 age group too. Fewer than 100 recorded 10000m times in both those age categories.

Track running, in the main, is for the hardcore - those that love it or those that excel at it. But there aren't too many of either of those groups.

How are you seeing that? I thought PO10 cuts times off at a certain qualifying time? eg 17:00 for overall men's 5000. Different for age groups.

The overall cuts off, but the age group ones don't for some reason.

It's one of the oddities of Po10 that you can often seen rankings for U20 U23 V35 V40 etc but in the no-mans-land of >23<35 there's less data visible. Fortunatley I'm sufficiently old...

It's even more acute regionally. Last year only 3 male V45 ran a 10k on the track in the NW of England! I could have been ranked 3rd in the region :-)

Interesting. TBF 10000m races barely happen! Outside of a 10000 festival.

I cleaned up one year by running a 300m ;-)
