I just did some orienteering near Farnborough. Mytchett. Was lovely. Bracken’s high still though.

Had a good run with someone till 11 when the elastic snapped, then I was within 30 seconds of them at 2 and 3 to go but finished about 2 min up after they made a mistake on last control.

That’s one of the things I used to love about orienteering. :)

Mytchett is just over a mile from my house and is an excellent playground for O, trail running and MTB. Unable to run today but will print map off and run this weekend. At least they’re will be elephant tracks through the ferns.

There were elephant tracks anyway - not always helpful. I had to get right on top of some controls to find them - As it should be I guess but it was the bracken blocking the view rather than any crap nav.

Can I have some advice from you experienced orienteers please? I’m still at the level where I struggle navigating without the help of a line feature. How would you go about navigating to control 15? The area around controls 15 and 16 was previously coppiced with a lot of wood lying around on the ground making moving in a straight line difficult.

It's all cross-hatched, so yes, hard running although there's some semi open. You run along the path to the end of the wooded cark green and then I think you've got a choice of two attackpoints:

1. The 'x' which is a 'special item' (it might be a bench or some forestry related thing) - you run due S through the distinctive trees from that using the two depressions on the hillside to guide you, or

2. take the little path S to the beginning of the fence to the SE of the building and then run due SE from that. Like this:

Thanks Oranj, it hadn’t occurred to me that the fence line is a line feature, doh. Following that would have made things easier.
