Do like jackdaws*, they're really smart birds.

* apart from when they are demolishing our feeders (and especially when it's at 4am on a summer's morning below the open bedroom window)

Just before light this morning and before I was fully awake I thought I heard a mistle thrush but I suspect it was a tawny owl. Four or five weeks and it would have been a mistle thrush. I am excite!

Right then: nightingale!
Possible? Impossible?
I am certain it wasn't a robin. I know my robins well. It is dark here at night, so not a distracted by street lighting blackbird. Besides: different song! This definitely contained the chugging and was infinitely more melodious and tonal.
We do get nightingales here but not usually in December!!!

It seems extremely unlikely to me. I've heard over-wintering Blackcap singing at this time of year, but usually on a sunny, mild day, not night time.

Strange, Hanneke! I'm pretty sure you can rule out nightingale, though, as they're only summer visitors here.

That is what flummoxed me AJLB. It was dark/dusk so no chance of seeing anything in the gloom. Mind, I don't recall ever having seen a nightingale! Only heard it.

J2R indeed! But it sounded so much like one... Maybe it was Robin. I have two in my garden: front robin and back robin...

Spent a bit of time yesterday looking at some lovely shovelers and teal. I'm not great at identifying ducks other than mallards. Trying to improve my recognition by one or two birds at a time.

Only had about 20 minutes, but that was enough to freeze the bejesus out of me. Ice on the pond and a feeling that winter is definitely here.

I've been doing the ducks too. We get teal and widgeon together so maybe that's your next one.

Widgeon was last week. I think the male's Mohican is fantastic and is a good marker for ID.

What's next on your list icemaiden?
