Nice. More waxwing needed. Ornamental trees in supermarket car parks are hot spots around here too (err, in good years)

Guillimots, Razorbills and Goosanders the order of the day. I hear that Long-Tailed Ducks back too, but haven't seen one yet.

Red Squirrel
Jays in abundance in Greenbank cemetery this morning. They love the holm oaks. More prolific than the other birds at 10:30. Amazing. Easily outnumbered the magpies, crows and wood pigeons, flitting hither and rither.

Kinky, I planted a Rowan tree in my garden thirty years ago; it's 10 metres tall, had loads of berries every year since it was an adolescent but never attracts a Waxwing! Blackbirds love it and eat the berries long before any hungry Waxwing would make its sea crossing! Good luck with yours!

steve45, we have the same thing with a pyracantha bush in the garden. I keep thinking its red berries will attract redwings into the garden, but the blackbirds end up consuming them all before any redwings turn up.

I read that Redwings are widespread from north to south but despite perfect low cloud this morning and looking throughout my run, I saw none!

A local blogger is seeing redwing every day at the moment. I think I caught sight of a small group yesterday near Guiseley

Saw a pair of yellow wagtails in flight over a stream yesterday in Northumberland. Beautiful birds with a very distinct way of flying!

Definitely yellow, not grey, wagtails, Minnie Mad? Greys are closely associated with streams, more so than yellows (and are puzzlingly named because they have a LOT of yellow on them).
