Thanks J2R, I keep trying to learn the sounds but I really need to go out with "people that know" which is quite a difficult thing to do these days.

Bonners sanderling are often to be found right at the water’s edge. The first thing you usually notice is how white they look. They have a quite distinctive stiff legged ‘scurrying march’ walk / running action. Fabulous little birds

Good haul of new migrants during my run today. Blackcap singing its heart out, Common Sandpiper flushed off the dam wall and then a resplendent Wheatear and a calling Redstart as I came back off the hill into the village. Also heard a report of a Sedge Warbler at the res and Reed Warblers back in Derbyshire so they should be serenading me soon on a daily basis from the Reed bed. Finally even though it keeps snowing it's starting to sound like spring!

I suspect this spring will ultimately be like one of those restaurants where all the food - appetisers, starters and mains - all arrived at the same time. I haven’t seen a hirundine. I am convinced all the chiffs aren’t here yet and I’ve heard one blackcap so far

@DT, thank you. I think from your previous description made me think of Sanderling as I was on the water's edge. Also a little pale flick when they flew off

I'm hearing chiffchaffs everywhere I go now DT. I'm pretty sure I heard a stonechat the other day too.

Like you Derby I've not seen a hirundine even though flocks of scores and a thousand have been seen not far away. I think that Chiffs, Willow Warblers and Blackcaps along my running route are now installed as territorial. No Reed, Sedge or Whitethroat yet and again they've already been seen within 10k of here.

Oh an I saw and heard a Tawny owl last night. Often heard, rarely see it! But I was out in the orchard at dusk, spraying the blossom for frost.
