Another barn owl incident on last night's run. I'm beginning to think they are attracted to the head torch. I just wish they'd make more noise when they swoop in to have a look :-)

They do seem attracted by head/chest torches, flanker - as do little owls.

Coots and moorhens are so common here they don't really register

The local Littlies are one of the very few things I miss from Cambridge.

(The others are “our” robin, the nailed-on hobbies and the best Bangladeshi takeaway in the country)

Could someone help me to identify a group of birds I see every day when I run please? They are brown, blackbird sized or slightly bigger perhaps thrush sized, and have a white stripe in their tail. They seem to like hedgerows and fields. I had put them down as fieldfares but now I am not so sure. They always fly upwards when I see them so I see their tails every time!

MM, I would say fieldfares sound a decent bet, from your description of location and behaviour - they're berry eaters, but you also see them picking in fields. They're grey-brown and around the size of blackbirds or mistle thrushes. I normally see them in little flocks of 10-25 or so (although a couple of years ago a solitary one did keep coming to our garden to feast on the crab apples).

They sound like Fieldfares to me too MM. They are easily disturbed, tend to go upwards and have an alarm call that sounds like a rattle. Also as they go up the underwings often appear silvery if the light catches them.

Dismal day here and a juvenile Sprawk decided to join the Blue Tits for a spot of lunch. Or at least tried too. All it got for it's efforts was a verbal ear bashing. I'm guessing that apart from round the feeders there isn't probably much about to be hunted today but it's quite restricted round my feeders and the Tits are quite clever in using the rosebush to protect themselves.
