I had a dull twinge in my right leg for the past few months, thought nothing of it, carried on regardless, thought it would disappear miraculously. It didn't. Even when I ran a 20 mile race at the end of March, I didn't listen to my body. Nope, I carried on. Last night I did a 7-mile hilly offroad run with my club, and after about 5 miles starting slowing up. Finished, got home, and since this morning have been in excrutiating pain every time I apply pressure to both the heel and the arch of my right foot - the pain shoots up into my thigh. I'm seeing my GP, and yes, I realise I should have got it checked out ages ago, but can anyone point to anything it could be, and how it could be fixed? Cheers. |

Could be a stress fracture, maybe caused by altering your gait and putting too much force on where it shouldn't be. In which case it needs to be protected and immobilised and you might be on crutches. Or, maybe the plantar or such, in which case, REST! But it will clear quicker than a break. (Although if it is that painful, I fear it may be option a:.) |

Oh, I'm going nowhere near my running kit until I feel fully better, and even then only gently. I've binned a planned Ultra in 2 weeks time, my only other target race is a mara in June, so plenty of time to get it sorted, he said confidently... Should a doctor be able to diagnose a stress fracture, or is that physio territory? |

Afaik a doc should spot that, the people I know hopped to their GPs. Any more opinions? |

A doc didn't spot much today (which is either reassuring or worrying, but I'm not a Google Doctor so I'm happy to go with what she said), but she referred me to a physio who I'm seeing this afternoon.

Update, for anyone interested - the physio diagnosed Extensor Tendonitis. Which is much better than a break, and is already feeling better with the gentle exercises suggested, and me not trying to favour the foot too much by hobbling around. Not going near my running kit for the next few weeks though.

That's much better news than it might have been, rest and some gentle exercise will hopefully sort you.,

Glad it isn't as bad as feared.
