Windsor Wool I missed your original question. Gosforth has a Sainsburys!

We stayed in Santon Bridge at the end of September. It doesn't meet your not-having-to-drive-for-a-meal criterion, unless you want to spend every evening in the Bridge Inn (which has a good menu), but it worked really well for us because it gave us great access to both our targeted areas of Western Fells: the ones you want to climb from Wasdale Head and the ones you want to climb from around Ennerdale Water.

Gosforth would be an equally good location in terms of access to good walks. (And it does have a Sainsburys!)

Ha!

That's because it's disguised as a village convenience store. But they have a genuine tie-up with Sainsburys and stock a decent range of Sainsburys own-brand stuff. We were equally surprised.

Buttermere was good enough for me - it had a pub although no shop. And I was staying in the hotel.
Although Scarth Gap got a bit tedious.

Thanks folks. Seems like I’ve been looking at about the right options.

If you are booking somewhere in Gosforth, I’d give the Globe a wide berth.
