I definitely have a soft spot for the Northern Fells, I love their emptiness. Would love to live there, I think that traditionally homes in the that area were a bit cheaper than more mainstream areas but I'm not so sure now. We were looking at a fantastic place in Mosedale the other day, but out of our reach

Perhaps bizarrely, high raise is one of my favourite spots in the lakes - usually very quiet and with cracking views on a clear day. Its been far too long since we're been though, but fortunately that'll be rectified tommorrow |

Autumnleaves
We had 2 lovely holidays years ago when we stayed in Cockermouth and explored the Northern fells. Several walks where we hardly saw a soul.

Sounds good Stu. Taking a few days up there?

I'd love to live within easy walking distance of the northern fells. Or to have enough time away from work to get to know every rock and blade of grass above Caldbeck. But yes, for us the only realistic option was to live a few miles outside the National Park where housing suddenly becomes ridiculously cheap.

The disparity is quite marked isn't it? We were up in your neck of the woods the other day due to that diversion around Bassenthwaite and were wondering if Cockermouth might be a viable place.

Cockermouth is more expensive than where we are, but the house prices are still realistic, you've got decent amenities in the town, and I can imagine it would be an easy transition there from Harrogate. I haven't looked, but Uldale and Ireby would be worth considering. Both have scenery and decent pubs, though you'd have to travel for almost anything other than a pub. And they might be cheaper than the Caldbeck/Hesket Newmarket/Mosedale corner. |

I thought Hesket Newmarket would be the place, but apart from being expensive it seems that the majority of the population are second-home owners. We were in the Old Crown the other Friday and the place was suddenly mobbed by a lot of 60/70-somethings dripping gold and Rolexes and talking with affected accents. "Haven't opened up the house for months dahling, a bit musty" etc. You can understand why locals get a bit fed up. We couldn't wait to get out of there.

Ooof! Dalston is a nice balance of down-to-earth and affluent, but it might be a little bit too far out for you. It's almost Carlisle. |
