I have to agree with Swittle: A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim. Last time I watched it was in August in a chambre d'hotes in France. Excellent.

In Germany and some other bits of Europe the favourite Christmas film is" Dinner for One" - a black and white short English language film featuring a butler who gets drunk. It's funny in a slapstick sort of way; but not funny enough to watch every year as they seem to do.

It's on youtube - the full version is a bit under 18 minutes so it's a quicker experience than most Christmas films. Why this is so popular is a bit of a mystery.

Love Actually
Elf
Miracle on 34th Street
Home Alone
It's a Wonderful Life
The Grinch
The Holiday

There is one I have caught on the telly with Susan Sarandon and Robin Williams which is a bit cheesy but makes me cry. No idea of name.

Has to be 'It's a wonderful life' for me. Used to watch it with someone but in separate homes on Christmas Eve every year. Sadly, that doesn't happen anymore.

I'd probably say Love Actually as well. We have Home Alone on video and it's an OK film although I find McCauley Culkin really irritating.

Why was it that The Wizard of Oz was always shown on Christmas Eve (or thereabouts) every year in the seventies?

I'm very fond of Dinner for One as it's just about my intellectual level, though my memory is, it's an NYE treat.
