Hello, I've turned into a bit of a fat loser (I mean, I was always a loser, but now I'm heavier than I was). It really is time I did something about it, but my motivation to lace up my old running shoes is lower than a low thing. I guess what I'm looking for is this: 1) Some relatively easy core exercises to get my belly wobbling 2) Some relatively healthy but most importantly delicious food ideas (no nuts, allergies) 3) A kick up the I know I'm not going to get great results as I'm a lazy get by default, and I like sugary crap and wine too much, but if I could just get my arse in gear I could at least not be such a fat loser, and maybe lose some fat... Any suggestions welcome! JK |

Velociraptor
Shut the computer down, put your shoes and trousers back on, and go out and walk for half an hour.

Variety? Mind you I can put on weight on while riding 100+ miles on a bike; its against the laws of physics but it's also surprisingly easy to do. |

My last was reclaimed by Manchester's finest (thanks guys, seriously) I already walk to and from work (just under 3 miles each way, give or take occasional wandering to catch Pokemon) - how much benefit would an extra 30 minutes give? But starting tomorrow I will add another walk in - can't hurt, and I can catch some more Pokemon... Any ideas for core stuff? All I know is planking and crunches - and I'm not too good at either! |

Swimming is the answer JK. Proper front crawl engages your core and gives you a thorough work out but you get to lie down while you're doing it.

Balance board. Just use it while tv watching/ironing etc etc Or swim, perfecting tumble turns will help! |

30 minutes as a one off won't do much but a consistent extra 30 minutes a couple/few times a week will soon mount up to a significant extra amount of work. What do you want "core" work for? Which parts of the "core" do you want working? Which plane(s) of motion do you want to improve? Is it for aesthetic reasons or function? Runners need different trunk & glute conditioning to rugby players who need different conditioning to swimmers who need different conditioning to ice skaters. If you're looking for "core" training to reduce abdominal fat it doesn't work. There's an old saying of "abs are made in the kitchen", that's not strictly true. They're made by the work you do, they're revealed by the kitchen. |

Does your work have a bike to work scheme? You could get a new bike that way? I think variety is right though, if you can't face running at the moment then try a few things and see what you like, go online and see what's happening in your area and go along. Keep an open mind, some of the exercise classes I have done aren't things I think I'd like but have really enjoyed in the end! |

Fragile Do Not Bend
My motivation to do any exercise is increased by having someone to do it with, and a planned date and time to do it. Is there a local informal running group (like a Run England group) near you? Or some friends you can run with? As for core exercises - I found that running did more for my core strength than specific core exercises. Yoga helped too. Improved core strength hasn't got rid of my belly fat though! |
