In the last five days, the web server has handled about 5.2M requests for various resources e.g. pages, images, CSS files, Javascript files - and about 0.75M of those requests have been for icons. So whilst I think the main bottleneck during peak time is the database, I'm sure it can't hurt to reduce the load on the web server either.

Personally I'd set an expiry date on stuff like the icons too - no need to request them every single page load, even if you do just return a not-modified or whatever it's called.
