Still places. Unbelievable. I can only assume people gave up trying last week.

That's a shame. Not really a surprise though I guess.
Thanks for the update, MsG.

I've shared the post into the Fetcheveryone facebook group, but here is the statement for anyone not on FB..

Ely Runners New Years Eve 10k

Dear Runners

It has been agreed that the 2020 NYE10K will be cancelled due to the ongoing pandemic.

We wanted to make a decision early to ensure our runners and club members (who are the majority of marshals) were kept up to date. If we had agreed to go ahead it would mean arrangements have to start to be made now and costs incurred. If we leave a decision until later, organisers would have an awful lot of work to do in a short space of time, at a time when careful thought and planning would be required especially regarding everyone’s health, safety and well-being.

We are also mindful of the small village hall and toilet facilities used on the day and such a large, lovely crowd of runners and families. Things are slowly easing, but we don’t know if there could be a second spike or have any part in contributing in any way to one.

Finally, we also don’t want to cause any unnecessary strain or anxiety on the welcoming village of Little Downham and the residents. We are very lucky to have such a supporting parish for this large event and want this to remain.

The lockdown may ease more as we move forwards and by December we may be back to a ‘normal’ way of life but we just don’t know when and how, which makes planning this event so very hard. Our race organisers are volunteers and it would be unfair to add additional stress or burden on them also.

Believe me, we are just as disappointed about this as you may be.

What we do know is that we absolutely will be back in 2021 and boy what a celebration that will be!

We really hope you come back to our event then and continue to make the NYE10K the most special event it really is :-)

Thank you 💚

Ps......this pandemic sucks 😐

Club announcement on the 2021 NYE 10k from the FB page:
facebook.com

Dear Runners and NYE10K Community
Sorry for the radio silence about this year, we were awaiting confirmation from committee before announcing.
We are really, really sad to advise that there will not be a 2021 New Years Eve 10km.
The club has been working really hard to ensure training has resumed, in a Covid secure environment and a lot of time a resource has focused on that in recent months, meaning some aspects have not been made priority whilst club member safety was ensured.
In addition, following the restrictions of last year, it was also agreed that the volunteers who give up their time during Christmas and New Year, every year deserve to spend the festive season with friends and family after not being able to do so last year. The event utilises up to 100 volunteers who work really hard both in the run up and on the day and we didn’t want to rush to plan something that would take considerable time and stress to set up to ensure runners and volunteers were safe. Volunteer well-being is of super importance and everyone deserves and needs a bit of R&R once in a while.
As a club, we cannot emphasise how difficult this decision was to make and absolutely hope and absolutely plan to come back with a physical event for 2022. The NYE10k is a unique, community spirited, fabulous event made so by both the runners and volunteers and we don’t want to lose that spirit.
We are sorry that it’s likely not the decision you wanted to hear but we really hope you understand and we really, really hope we do see you in 2022.

Thanks for relaying that to us.
They have taken the time to explain their reasoning, and on that basis I have no problem with their decision.
