Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Notice that 910 people have opted to publish their results. That is not a bad response in 24 hours, particularly as it was not advertised by the organisers. Why the hell they just don't publish and be done with it!

The friend I supported to her first marathon is still in Scotland on holiday. I am sure she will publish when she has full web access.
My fella, doing his first marathon too, will also publish when he climbs out from under a broken car!

That (now) 922 is just for the marathon.
There are 520 for the half and admittedly less for each of the 10k, 5k and junior but that doesn't surprise me. I guess those that do 26.2 miles are more likely to want it officially documented.

And.. and.. and...

they like to call it the Edinburgh MARATHON festival so really should try not to annoy marathon runners.

call it the Edinburgh running festival then people will have a better idea of what the set up is all about!

Why do they do it to themselves? After so many years worth of marathons when things have gone wrong/been badly done, you'd think they would aim to put on the events to the best of their ability. Its just totally mad to throw in an unnecessary decision like this and lie about your reasons for doing it! Its only hurting themselves, how many people will bodyswerve GSI events now when they prove themselves to be so incompetent at organising them?

Jambomo: Do what to themselves? As long as people keep turning up for this race, all they're doing to themselves is reducing their costs. They probably subscribe to PT Barnum's (misattributed) theory that there's a sucker born every minute. It doesn't matter if 3,000 people don't come back to your race as long as you get another 3,000 suckers who think that because it's got the name of a capital city and "Marathon" in the title they should go and do it.

I don't know why these races seem so immune to public criticism. Often the majority who didn't come across problems seem to react negatively to criticism of the race, as if it's somehow criticism of their achievement. Which of course it isn't. But it makes it more difficult to tell people to avoid certain races, because you don't want to offend those for whom it was a treasured memory.

I'm a bit confused about the 'ownership' of the marathon. I thought I read somewhere that GSI have been running it for the last 3 years. If so is that under licence from the "owners", or did GSI 'buy' the Edinburgh Marathon? Or am I wrong in thinking GSI only involved for 3 years?

GSI have been involved for onger...I think from 2007. Up til 2006 it was more of an edinburgh marathon but there were rumours it was going to fold due to increased costs and the stopping of council funding. That was when the route moved to east lothian, and I am pretty sure GSI have organised it since then, but not sure about pre 2007. In their favour I guess is that they did stop the event folding and keep it going.
