Petition signed. I didn't run Edinburgh this year, but I would like to run it sometime, and I'd like the results to be published - for all the reasons given above. Right now this race (and Bournemouth, and any other race run by GSi) is off my to-do list...

Whilst improving the situation for those wanting to prove GFA/Championship Qualification/BQ's etc. opting in will NOT resolve the issue with Run Britain/Power of 10/IAAF. They need to send the FULL results over so they can load 'em up. Partial results are not included, it must be the FULL results.

Given the ridiculously over the top commercial-isation in the sign up process and the previous bad press i must admit i kind of expected some kind of howler from this year's race. Not publishing the results yet allowing anybody to look up anyone's results and pics on the photos page is just laugh-out-loud-able.

Just back from a holiday where I was offnet and I was wondering how Edinburgh had gone. Same as usual, apparently. Had a look at the GSI website: to quote "GSI Events Limited, located at the EICA;Ratho specialise in organising events that provide a fundraising platform for charities." I think running events might be better if they were done by people who specialised in organising running events.
I hadn't realised before that GSI were also behind Jogscotland's One Big Weekend, though that was the first place I encountered their individual approach regarding non-publication of results. With a bit of ferreting it was possible to find stuff out and my conclusion was that several of the events had pathetic turnout numbers and non-publication could primarily be to conceal this. I recall being highly sceptical of the numbers quoted for Edinburgh two or three years back - claims of over 20 000 entrants; but oddly, around 12000 finishers.

I would say part of "all the fuss" for me is that their reasoning regards non publication of results is a big fat lie. Or are they saying every other race is in the wrong and should be charged under data protection!? Come on!!! One thing i can't stand is liars. Also many like full results for reasons other than qualification etc and entering a race should reasonably expect to see full results not only top 3 or only those that opt in.

Maybe they are correct !? In which case, any race which told you where people are on the course during the actual race would be in so much trouble :-o. Especially if they illustrated it with, say, little stick figures running round on a map.

Maybe we should all club together and bring a class action against every other race organiser ever, just to prove GSI's correctness!

I think the data protection act is a difficult one to show either way. Personal data could possibly include race results so they could possibly argue a case however, there was a debate about over-zealous application of the act as some were using it Inappropriately to refuse freedom of information requests. There is an expectation that is should be applied using some common sense.
There is an expectation from runners when running a race, that results will be published and you could argue that they are already published as they are on the website, just not available for all to see (but possible for strangers to see if they get your number from a photo) or in a formal results list, which means they are breaking their own data protection stance, so it is a stupid approach from them.

Isnt it ironic that Great Run e-mailed me today after I did the Ediinburgh 10 miles 4 weeks ago and said:
'Remind yourself how well you did a few weeks ago by checking the results online'

I'm chuffed to bits that I can celebrate my marathon finishing time of 3:13:13 and not one of you can tell me that I'm lying.
