Thanks everyone, especially Paul The Builder for all the details - This will be my second marathon. First one in April was done in 4:03 - I'm hoping to get a sub 4 this time and I'm in the second wave for 3:50 to 4:15 finishers. I might aim to be fairly near the front if that means I can avoid any bottlenecks - worth a try?

That wave has been 3:30 to 4:15 in the past (perhaps your 3:50 was a typo? Or maybe they did change it, but it seems quite a narrow band). I'm very much from the 'start steady, keep your energy for when you'll need it later' school of marathoners, so I'd probably put myself about a 1/3 of the way back in that pen (let the over-zealous charge off) and make sure my first 2 miles were 9:00, and definitely not too fast. If the start is in the same place again (looks like it is) then there's only one RH turn after the first 400m which might be seen as a bottleneck (if you're on the extreme right of the race, you'll probably slow to a brief jog/walk, I tend to stay in the middle), it's plain sailing after that.

Did we have to chose our wave on registration? I can't remember. I ran a 3.25 in Rome in perfect conditions in March, so hoping for 3-teens, although would be quite a jump. Managed a 1.33 half in Hackney last weekend, so who knows! Lots of training to be done before then!

If you entered on line then you have to select one of 3 options for expected finish time (I've just done it now):
- under 3h50m
- 3h50m to 4h15m
- over 4h15m

I assume that determines your wave. And also it looks like wave 1 has grown a bit, and wave 2 shrunk a bit, from last 2 years (think it was just one mass start before that).

Yes, will want to keep it steady for first few miles and staying in the middle of the road worked for me in Brighton, where there are lots of out and back and narrow sections. Looking at some of the route on Street View, it does seem like a fair few wide roads in Dublin.

Know what you mean about the slightly odd wave times; 3:50 to 4:15 is a 25 min window, with everything faster before it and everything slower after. Maybe it is based on their experience from previous years.

My 16 week training plan starts next weekend! And less than 10 days ago, I had no idea I'd be running an autumn marathon. Good luck RBNLMX, that 1:33 Hackney Half was good work - on a very hot day too :)

Good luck Dr Dan - hope the training is going OK. Less than 6 weeks to go now and the long runs are getting longer...

Really looking forward to this one :)
