Just checked the official course info for my Thessaloniki marahton - the start is 43m and the finish is sea level so officially it is downhill. In theory I think downhill should only be downhill if the total descent is more than the total ascent - if that makes sense - ie as some other have said, although Loch ness net downhill there as some challenging climbs enroute.

Longwayround (LWR)
I'm just trying to get my head round this: surely if a race finishes 42m lower than it starts then there must be 42m more descent than ascent.

Jovi - GFA is different than Po10 anyway, in the past it hasn't been as strict. As far as I know they still accept courses on the ARC certs too.

Interesting move from Po10, the downhill has been around a while, but they never enforced it before. Usual UKA moving the goalposts and retrospectively applying stuff I see!

Sorry - got myself confused - what I meant was that even if a net downhill it can sometimes be misleading as to how difficult the course is - I had a bit of a blonde moment. :)

Gus: "DeeGee - do Po10 have a point to point criteria, what is it ? What about Edinburgh, would that not fail ( and must also be close to failing the downhill criteria ) "

Sorry Gus, the IAAF one.

Re: Edinburgh - as I understand it, the London Road start is just 'legal' and the Regent Road start just 'illegal' (finish is approx 8 miles from start)
