Apple have it on the latest phones in the US (Satellite calls to emergency services); I presume at some point this will come more universal? support.apple.com |

I remember reading something a few years ago saying SMS can sometimes get through even when there isn't enough signal for a phone call. Depending on how "no signal" your "no signal"is, this might be worth reading: firstaidtrainingcooperative.co.uk |

999 will also work on any signal, not just the one you're signed up to. But unlikely if the phone is in the river. |

It wouldn't be an ideal solution but carrying a whistle could be a cheap option (at least it may alert someone mobile to your plight!)

I have a look at that jacdaw. Spot isn't cheap either and all sattellite beacons need a subscription, which I am happy with. Cannot get a Spot.

I mean: I am in the middle if scenic nowhere. I have just fallen down a waterfall and in stead of my shoulder, I have fractured my leg so I cannot walk out, I have to call Mountain Rescue.
