Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Does deep heat work?

It seems to cause a mild burning on my legs for about 30 minutes that fades. I hope that it increases bloodflow to aid healing but to be honest I don't notice much of a difference.

Do you have a different experience?

I only use Deep Heat for aches, or before exercise on a bitterly cold day. For injuries, an ice pack usually suffices. For a simple muscle rub, I now use Radian B as Goddard's horse oil is virtually nonexistent nowadays.

There were tests done on a Michael Mosley programme on this. In short, one group used a heat rub and the other had ice baths. Using thermal imaging they found that the heat/cold didn't go into the muscles and stayed only skin deep and there was no real benefit on the muscles. The verdict was that if it makes you feel better then just roll with it, or don't bother and save your money.

alpenrose - that makes sense.

I don't notice any healing effect with deep heat & it stinks out my home so I think I'll ditch it in favour of a hot bath. That definately does seem to help my recovery

there are loads of other products Keiren - depends what you want it for - heating before a run, after a run, cooling to heal etc. I got some great stuff with aloe vera I got on hols.

I've been getting some invasive massage on my calves. I was hoping the warming would help the healing. I think hot bath and some red wine does the trick. Okay, maybe not the wine...

don't rub the wine on your legs - internal use only

Whenever I have invasive massage, I'm always advised to do icing over the next 24 hours.
