I find it’s quite interesting. I had no idea before that there were three different scripts. There are markers for subject, object, topic, place, possession, etc. And the verb is at end. Often the subject and or object can be completely omitted as it understood by context. A typical sentence might be ‘well is’ which will mean ‘I am well’, but if you add the question marker to make it ‘well is?’ then it means ‘are you well’. There’s no definite or indefinite for nouns either. One thing I miss is that there is no part where I can speak and it checks it. I think that does make it more difficult for my confidence to actually speak it.

In my experience, Japanese people are ridiculously happy when someone speaks even a few words. They have a strong self image that their language is so complicated that no foreigner could possibly manage it. Learning kanji is obviously a big task though.

It does seem pretty complicated. Though when I looked at comparisons with other languages it’s not the most difficult for English speakers to learn (level 4 out of 5) I think, depending on source. Kanji are categorised into different levels based on education/expectations. But there can be more than one way to say a kanji so that does add a spanner into the works for writing/reading.
