I just got a useful popup box:

When to use el with feminine nouns

El is often used for masculine nouns and la for feminine ones. But when the noun begins with a stressed a- or ha-, you must use el regardless of the gender.

The example here was el agua.

There aren't many common ones though, apart from agua?

hambre hunger
amas de casa housewife
asma asthma
arpa harp
águila eagle

You'll often see una changed to un for the same words.

Only happens when the two words are together - so it's still la pura agua (pure water), for example.

I'd have got those wrong then. I'd assumed agua to be masculine, because of the whole 'el agua' thing.

~looks nervous~

'mapa' really is masculine I suppose?
