It's not Indo-European in the way I like my Indo-European languages to work - Dutch or Danish for example - broadly the same as English but just with different words. All of the major Romance languages are far less complex than their Latin roots, ditto modern Dutch, German and English compared with Anglo-Saxon. Languages that remained isolated tend to retain their quirks, viz Welsh and Latvian. Similarly, if you want to know how twisted Old Norse (northern Germanic) was, all you have to do is attempt to learn Icelandic.
