My translation of that would be "a kind word and the cat is pleasant". I'll check with a higher authority (MadameR), may be something idiomatic.

It was posted in one of the discussion forums, Glenn, so not actually a Duolingo phrase - but several native Russian speakers had commented on it and didn't question the meaning. "и" can mean "even", as well as "and", and "кошке" is in the dative case, so I think the literal translation would be something like "A kind word even to a cat is pleasing".

I can manage 'we do not pay for the chicken'. Does the '-ado' rule work?

Chicken is one those words that seems to vary a lot around Europe.

Poulet, Pollo, Pollo for the Latin languages (but Portugese has a completely different word), Hen, Huhn in English & German, but Kip in Dutch, iâr in Welsh, ‎kurczę in Polish

The Scandi languages are closer to the English than the Latin - kyckling (Sweden) or kylling (Danish and Wegie).

Generally speaking the more basic and day to day a word it, the more likely there are to be differences between languages.
