On top of the Spanish and Norwegian I was already doing, about a month ago I started Danish as well just to see how it compared to Norwegian. Answer, it is very similar but the pronunciation is different. These similarities and differences keep me mentally on my toes having to remember which word, spelling and pronunciation goes with which language! I think I'd better not take up Swedish any time soon, otherwise I'd get really confused ;-)! Having said that, I could actually understand a few words of Icelandic on a TV programme recently :-). |

One didn't need words for those, the visuals rendered those obsolete. "Brenna" and "brenndur" were easily understood for Hrafn's demise. I watched it more for the vocabulary than the story line. |

Just done the verb "to be" in Welsh, some of the multitude of ways of saying yes and no and a start on the future tense. Can see why "he/she/it is" etc. doesn't turn up until about the 50th activity in Welsh - it's a good bit trickier than in the other European languages I know.

After a week or so spent revising previous lessons, to try and reinforce some of the material that hadn't quite sunk in the first time, I'm back on the new stuff. I'm half way through "Verbs in the present" (surprised this didn't come a bit earlier in the course - they've only used a couple of verbs up to now, and not really explained the conjugations). I'm starting to feel like I can put together some proper sentences at last... Flatlander - I'm sure that will come in useful if you ever need to discuss dismembering a corpse with a chainsaw...

ITC, the Icelandic TV programme was "Trapped" (Icelandic "Ófærð") which has just finished airing on BBC4 in the UK en.wikipedia.org It was OK but nothing special. I was struck by some similarities between Icelandic and Danish, as you've mentioned before. |

As I understand it Icelandic is an intrinsically older language, less tainted by change from the old norse.

Just looked up from this discussion to the blog list and saw "It's oh so quiet" (D2). Fetcheveryone seems to be developing an Icelandic theme.
