Suzi Q
Just wondered if anyone else runs with a herniated disc. Apparently I have two discs which are herniated, they no longer restrict movement at all, but I do get pain down my right leg. I take pregabalin, which helps stop this pain (as it's nerve pain). No one can really seem to give me a definate answer as to whether running is going to actually make it worse or not, and so I've decided to give it a go, doing a run/walk thingy as it's ages since I've run!

Just wondered really what other people's experience is of running with this, or similar problems

Thanks

Hello and welcome to Fetch. :) I'm not a real doctor but there are folks on here that are and maybe along in a bit.

Have you asked your specialist who diagnosed your herniated disc? They may be in the best position to advise you as they will know the extent of your problem.

Best wishes.

Thanks for the reply! Trouble is, it was a consultant who diagnosed, who at the time said "no more marathons". Last time I saw him he wasn't very helpful about the running.

I'm more wanting to hear from others who run with similar problems, or have tried to run with similar problems, rather than asking for medical advise here as such.

yes
I have L4/L5 issues with loss of feeling and sensation in left leg since 2000
Actually it dates back furthe than that
pain has not been a major issue since the last lare up in 200, but i have a weak glute now(only just went to a phys 2 weeks ago)
Was in such pain in 2000 that i actually did no exercise at all for 8 weeks-and im a serial daily exerciser

I run quite a lot now

I advise that you seek out a sports specialist who will get you back to running-its all to easy to say "dont run" as a doc

i am a doctor BTW, just not an orthopod or neurosurgeon
personally, i cant see why you cant run, if it doesnt hurt
I hope you have been given a decent programme of core exercises

You need to find someone more sympathetic to what you want to do, rather than just advising you not to do things that you want to.

Running can help lose weight and strengthen your back muscles, both of which could help with a herniated disc. Moving, bending and stretching could make it worse.
Whatever you do, you should take it slowly, sudden increases in activity could make it worse long before you get the benefits.

Thanks guys! I've started a pilates class, well being doing it for a while now. It's the appi type of pilates, designed by physios, and I'm amazed at how much more I can do. The lady who runs it also specialises in helping people to get back to things after injury, and so it's all very good :D. My posture is so much better, I am more flexible, and I've found my core muscles again!

I do think that running will help again with weight loss. I have put on weight since I stopped (I was running a lot before I hurt my back, and I found it hard to cut down on eating when I stopped running).

I used to be a member of fetch back then, as "Tigger" or "TiggerSC" (can't remember which, and I was deleted anyway, cause I wasn't using it). Decided to rejoin as something different this time, I needed the feeling of a new start, but remember you Plodding Hippo. Don't you run marathons??!! Lots of marathons?

But run them you do!

Back did play up a bit yesterday, probably as a result of the running the day before (resorted to taking tramadol). However, it's alright again today, so I'm suspecting it may just need to get used to the idea! I think taking it gently is going to be the way to go.

Sympathy, Suzi. My L3-s1 is screwed. It's all about core strength and posture for me. If I stop running then it gets bad so the key for me is maintaining. Unfortunately I am 7m post a pregnancy where I was on bed rest for long spell due to complications and then banned from exercise. So my back is awful right now too and getting back into it is quite tough. My only advice would be stay active but don't iverdo it. Softly softly and start back with a long programme of run walk. My physio (who deals with rugby teams and triathletes so specialises in sport) advice was if it hurts after a run then the next run should take a step back in your process until it doesn't hurt after a run if you see what I mean. Good luck x
