Ta Gobi. It sounds like we're not a million miles away on that then - I just prefer to work on 2-2:30 for the longest run, which ends up at 15-20

SL- to be fair this is how I coach and as a man who doesn't race I work on a 90 min long run , I might do 1hr 40. The runner I was never focused on halfs so my longest run in prep for a half was probably 100km |

always a pleasure to have Gobi's opinion. My best ever half was on the back of marathon training, the main aim in that training was running on tired legs.....so putting in the faster miles once your had got some fatigue into them (this was on the advice of my massage man a sub 2;30 marathon runner) this would fit well with Gobi's view of running around 10ks |

OK, so maybe I'll do something like 8 miles easy, 5 miles HM pace, 2 miles easy. Although I'm not sure I'm really likely to be running on tired legs after 8 miles easy. Maybe that needs to be 8 miles semi-hard (maybe HM pace plus 45 seconds)?

J2R - it doesn't need to be that hard, the time adds to the fatigue and it is harder to pace adjust than you realise. Also think cumulative, I would be running the 10km untapered as well so may have done 10/20 milers the day before as well. |

I suspect you'll be running on tired legs after 4 or 5 miles of hmp. That's a fair chunk.

NN, my idea was to run 8 miles easy (e.g., 8 mins/mile), then 5 miles at HM pace, then 2 miles easy again. I'll see how it goes. Maybe start next week, after this weekend's 10 miler (which will itself be a significant training input, I imagine, as I'll be running faster than 6 mins/mile if I can).

Yesterday's 10 miler wasn't all I'd hoped for - strong wind prevented a sub-hour time. But I did another 7 miles easy in the afternoon, so I imagine that's a pretty good training day for the HM.

Yesterday I managed to do something close to the kind of long(ish) run I think Gobi is referring to above. I ran 7.5 miles easy (7:45 pace), then 5.4 miles at HM pace (well, actually about 5 seconds per mile slower than target HM pace), then 1.7 miles easy again to finish off. Slightly concerned about those 5 seconds, but it's pretty close, and I am feeling a bit tired, as I've been running a rather higher mileage than usual (60 miles last week, which is very high for me, and 31 miles in the first 3 days of this week).
