Thanks, larkim, I'll take a look. But I was interested more in what the fast runners on here actually did, as opposed to what training plans suggested to do. (They may, of course, be the same).

J2R - all distances are subject to the same rules - ie we fatigue at X% of a distance. The reason for this is a training failure.

EG 20 mile long runs where 4 - 16 are at MP - MP is hard from 22 - 26 miles not 4 to 16. Hence people like me came up with new sessions to support this.

So, you want to do a half marathon well, run a 10km having done a 6 mile warm up - you race flat out but with miles in your legs, then run a few more miles afterwards just to build endurance.

Doubles are great BUT 2 x 5 does not equal 1 x 10 they are different and bring different levels of fatigue and development to the table.

@J2R - that makes sense. Though hopefully the Pfitz plans are a little more "scientific" and detailed, so perhaps worthy of scrutiny anyway. Though I suspect for many (possibly even the sub 80 brigade) that providing the long runs were adjusted upwards, following the 5k plan or the 10k plan or the HM plan would turn out fairly indistinguishable results for most people.

Gobi's suggestions make perfect sense, as usual!

OK, Gobi, got it this time. Interesting idea, and very persuasive. I'll give that a go for my next long training run.

JZR - my methods turned 34.10(I ran 33.13 at Shinfield but it was 150 or so metres short, 34.10 at Yateley so very honest course) into 73.2X (I cant remember) without tapering and having run the first 5 miles in 28.45(I was pacing someone who didn't have the legs and told me to crack on)

Even more persuasive, Gobi! 28:45's my PB for 5 miles, so that has to be good luck. :)

Fascinating as ever Gobi.

Out of interest, any particular reason you'd stop at 15 for the long run, or is it just a function of time/pace?

It's over distance and over time, there is a point where you need no more

I'd say not much difference between 10k and half training.

Similarly I'd say you could run a half well off marathon training or 5k training.
