Diagnosing groin strain

A couple of times through this training block, I've felt what I think might be a groin strain at the top of my right leg in the days after long runs. It never hurts when I'm running, only in the few days after. I did a 28 mile week last week, with a 12 miler on the Sunday. Since then, I wouldn't say it hurts, but when I put weight on my right leg, I can definitely feel a bit of a twinge. Despite that, I went out for five miles on Tuesday, then four miles today. Again, no pain at all while I'm running, just when I get up from having been sat down for a while, then generally when I put weight on it. I'm three weeks out from my marathon and I'm supposed to be doing a 20 miler on Saturday. In two minds really whether to do it or not. I've already done an 18 and two 16s, so I feel like it wouldn't be the end of the world if I didn't do it. On the other hand, it would just be a good confidence booster before a taper period when it will hopefully go away. What do the wise ones of fetch think? |

Rule #1 - Get to the start line in one piece. The trouble is, we can’t easily predict whether any given session that’s intended to help fitness will exacerbate any niggles. I’d suggest a middle ground - start the session, but keep the pace nice and modest, and be prepared to cut the run short if things don’t feel 100% right. If you’re left with swelling or a lingering dull ache that doesn’t go away, do get yourself checked out to ensure there’s nothing more serious than groin strain at play. |

This feels like really good advice, thank you!! Funnily enough, I just saw a clip from Paul Radcliffe's podcast, where she said she has a 10 minute rule. If whatever niggle she's feeling hasn't gone within the first 10 minutes of her run, she calls it there and heads home. Think that will be my plan on Saturday. It's annoying really, but like going to the doctors, as soon as I posted this, it started feeling a bit better 😂 Fingers crossed!! |

Happily, it feels a lot better today! So definitely going out for my 20 miler tomorrow afternoon!
